My Rant.....

Okay this is day 2 of my strict Zone diet.....here's my rant....
WTF is the matter with Americans and food ? That is my question. Last night Brendan and I watched a movie called "Fast Food Nation" it left me feeling completely disgusted with how people eat fast food(me excluded - I haven't eaten fast food in like 20 + years) It was alll about the shit Americans consume because we are all about fast fast fast. Oh and slaughtered beef - GROSS I think I'm sticking to chicken and fish! Today when I went to the grocery store I was acutely aware of all the people around me and what they were putting in their baskets. Not to mention how the stuff they were eating made them look. It seemed to me I looked anorexic compared to most of them. It made me feel very sad that they seem so unhealthy and do not need to be that way. It made my stomach turn. Frozen corn dogs, potatoe chips, soda, TV dinners, kids Lunchables, ice cream, donuts....sugar-sugar-sugar. THAT IS WHY WE ARE THE FATEST NATION PEOPLE! Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Produce, dairy, meats....you cannot go wrong if you stay away from the center of the store. Safeway has this new ingenius nut bar. OMG you HAVE got to go there! They have every nut you can think of roasted and served warm to you. You can even make your own nut butter...awesome. I got a ton of nuts and cashew butter for my fat blocks tomorrow. I can't wait!! I don't mean to sound at all judgemental -well kind of not - but I don't know why i was so in tune with it today. Maybe because I am strict now...I dunno. When did food become the enemy people? It seems to me that people are eating to get them to an early grave instead of eating for health. Just a thought....PLEASE don't be offended by what I have to say. I was simply noticing how we eat as a nation...watching that movie really set it off for me.Here's my day #2...
6:00am Zone bar & coffee with half & half
9:00am - Crossfit workout
15 hang squat cleans 25 pound dumbells (50 # total)
400 meter run
repeat 4 rounds for time
I finished 3rd place in 19:23 or so....
10:00am 1 hardboiled egg, 1 ounce cheese, 1 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup blackberries, 6 cashews
12:45 barfed up my vitamins. NEVER take them on an empty stomach again...
1:45 4 cups greens, 1 cup diced tomatoes, 2 ounces grilled chicken, 6 cashews, 2 T salad dressing
3:00 Zone bar, coffee with half & half
7:00pm 1 ounce chicken, 1 ounce cheese, 1 corn tortilla(14 grams of carbs which makes it a 2 blocker) avocado & olive oil to crisp the tortilla
1 gallon of water consumed, more vitamins (duh!) and perfect 10 blocks for the day....
Okay...that's my rant. Hope I didn't offend anybody. I didn't mean to....

I want to see that movie, but like you, I'm afraid it'll be too disgusting for me to take - so waiting to be in the right mood.

I've come close to hurling my vitamins, too. I was so close for so long and out in public. Ever since then, I throw down at least one handful of nuts with any pill.

I saw that movie and I couldn't believe it! I was pretty disgusted too.

I think I'm going to go buy some Taco Bell now...
JUST KIDDING!

Thanks for posting your daily Zone menus, it really helps me figure out some better food choices. I'm definitely not following the Zone perfectly, but I've incorporated a lot of the principles. I think I'll get more strict with it after Boston in preparation to run the CIM w/ you. I gotta be able to keep up with your fast pace! :)

jeffo,
That's a great ides eating the nuts with the vitamins. I have a fear of puking and HATE feeling like that in public. I was in line to pick up my kid and had to hold it until I got a parking spot and could run to the little girls bathroom. GROSS!! I did make it tho - today I made sure to take my fish oil and etc. vitamins with my meal. WHEW! See the movie....

Shari,

Living in a University town, I see a lot of students buying bad food. But I can provide some hope for the future, because I see as many, if not more, students trying to eat healthy. Though a lot of them still buy some bad things - it's rare to see a shopping cart without ice cream in it - I usually see students buying whole wheat products, fresh fruit and veggies, chicken breasts, plain yogurt, etc. It's no guarantee, but it's a start, and a hope that we can make the nutritional future of our nation better.

Step 1) Fix the nutrition programs in colleges! Did you know most of them are funded by food companies? The first one ever was founded by General Mills.

7-9 servings of cereals, breads, and pastas a day, right? Yeah, THAT'S eating healthy..

B,
You work so hard getting others fit and healthy and I am so inspired by you and learn how to be a better trainer by mimiking you. It's fun for me to pack your lunches and make sure you are staying in the zone....besides, you kick ass and I can sorta take credit for that ;) hee hee

Jacob,
I used to work at UCSC and I know students try to eat helthy, but your right - on campus there is mostly cheap quick foods readily available. You really need brain food.....keep setting the example and your classmates will follow.....ice cream is okay sometimes and in small portions ;) When ya coming back to SC ? You did so awesome meeting the 100 challenge! Are you doing the Xfit games in June ?

The problem as I see it (bad diet = obesity and bad health)is that people, especially Americans, being spoiled brats of "convenient foods". I call them "Instant foods". I would also include any types of "bars" in that same category.

That's also why people go to places like Whole Foods to get their "instant healthy food".

But what and how much people eat many times is about more than food. You don't have any "food issues" so it's easier for you to come across as judgemental about people that do.

People are lazy and in denial! And until enough of them suffer more from bad eating habits, as well as not enough exercise, nothing will change. In fact it will get much worse.

It's simple, but complicated (mentally). If it was easy, everyone would be fit and healthy.

Shari,

I have spring break from April 2nd to April 8th. I may be in Yosemite for part of it, but I am hoping to get out to CFHQ at some point.

I won't be competing in the CF games, but I will be helping Russ prepare and will be there to root him and you guys on!

Tracy,
Um...I DO take offense to what you wrote - I don't know you you don't know me. I do not have food issues I eat all damn day.Usually 5 or 6 meals. If you have issues then that's sad...and I hope you work them out. I chose to eat healthy and what my body needs to thrive instead of crap like most people eat. I agree I do look lean....good! I don't know anybody who doesn't want to look lean. Are you a runner ? Runners are usually leaner then the general public and I am also a CrossFit trainer so I push my body hard. I obviously hit a nerve with what i wrote...take a look inside yourself. If you don't like what I wrote then find some other blog to read and not mine I guess. Good luck to you...

Tracy,
Your right about Americans being spoiled. We are and most people don't want to put in the hard work it takes to change. As far as the instant food deal, whatever. Choices are made daily, blame who or what you will...but people make bad choices.
I work in health care and have for years. Obesity is often the reason that people are sick. Yet, they continue in there bad choices. It's not easy to change but there is a simple solution. Don't eat so damn much.
I see from your blog that you've lost a great deal of weight. It's awesome! It seems your a little sensitive about it still.
I have eating issues as well. It frustrates me that even though people have diabetes, hypertension, and are so big they can't walk or take care of them self's the Frost thing they want when they come into the ER is food!
I hear what Shari is saying, she is just speaking the truth. It's refreshing to have someone just say how it is and not sugar coat things. It's not judgmental it's the truth.
Your right on Shari it should turn our stomachs. Most People eat for all the wrong reasons.

Jen,
Thanks you for having my back on this. I really didn't mean to sounds judgemental or whatever - I'm just saying it like it is. Hope you're doing well.....

You'll like this Shari.

I read an article recently (I think it was on T-Nation, I'll try to find it) that outlined the eating habits of the average American. Guess what they're oddly reminiscent of? The way that Sumo Wrestlers in Japan are INSTRUCTED to eat in order to weigh 500 pounds.
